A few months back I attended a local business meeting and met Juanita Yoder from Gallery 33 at Comisky’s Greenhouse in Hightstown, NJ. We started to talk and she told me that in addition to their beautiful plants and gardening supplies, they also carry a selection of New Jersey made local food products. Not one to ever turn down the chance to check out something new in the food world, I recently took a ride over to take a peek at their selection and find out about some of the food products being offered.
Now, mind you, no one paid me to write this post, and I bought my own jar of Black Aronia Jam, but I am nevertheless happy to report that they had some interesting local food products and you might want to consider making a visit if you are in the area and looking for a last minute gift or stocking stuffer idea.
What’s the deal on Aronia Jam?
The Black Aronia berry, which is also known as the Black Chokeberry, has been studied along with blueberries and other colorful fruits for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Like blueberries, and other fruits and vegetables such as grapes, apples, and purple cabbage, Black Aronia berries are a source of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are water-soluble and in the lab (in vitro) have been shown to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Research done in humans, as with much nutrition research, is less clear and is still ongoing.
Since this is a holiday shopping post, however, let’s not spend too much time on the science and instead focus on the local products you can find over at Comisky’s. In addition to the Black Aronia jam, you’ll also find an interesting Jersey-tomato based ketchup, chocolates from a chocolatier from Windsor, NJ and local honey from Hightstown, NJ.
Oh, and if you need a holiday centerpiece or a gorgeous poinsettia? They have those too.
